Why My Hair?

Female hair loss can occur for a number of reasons. Before you decide on a course of action you should be clear as to your specific situation. Secondary causes are usually temporary. This means your hair should eventually return over time once the cause is removed. Pregnancy, stress, diet, medications, illness and other conditions fall into this category. Some causes of hair loss are less clear, like alopecia areata. If you are unclear as to exactly why you're losing your hair you should consult with your physician before starting any treatment.

The most common cause that affects women dealing with hair loss is called hereditary or "female pattern" hair loss. Its causes are genetic and hormonal. This type of hair loss is often thought of as "hair thinning." It can sneak up on you in your early 30s rather subtly and go on for years into your 50s. Hormones such as DHT work to dry up and suffocate your hair follicles. This type of hair loss can end with a hopeless degree of permanent hair loss.

Female pattern hair loss is unique. It occurs in a very generalized fashion over the entire scalp. When hair loss starts to happen, your hair begins to behave differently. That's the first sign that something is up. Be as educated as you can be about the health of your hair. The earlier you start, the better your chances are of keeping it on your head where it belongs.
